Crane busbar is commonly used to provide power to overhead traveling cranes. It consists of a fixed unit, the drive rail (which are connected with the power supply), and the lifting rod (which are fixed atop the crane). The drive rail serves as the source of power for the lifting rod. The fixed rod can be operated manually or electronically, depending on the needs of the operation. Both the power supply and the lifting rod can be controlled by one single lever.

This type of overhead crane busbar has an advantage over other varieties in that it can be positioned close to the end of the crane where the power supply unit resides. This positioning enables this unit to be placed at any height above the ground, while all other varieties are limited to the working height of the truck or the work platform. This allows the crane operator to control the height at which the crane is raised to accommodate the different loads. With the lack of a fixed point of attachment, this variety is unable to handle loads that are significantly higher than the truck platform or the top of the crane itself.

A two-pronged set of crane busbars are used in tandem with a single pole double ended power supply for the purpose of lifting heavy objects vertically. The single pole set consists of a large single metal pole, while the double-ended power supply is fixed to a larger metal coil that is in turn connected to a number of smaller metal conductors. The single pole set is designed so that it can be operated in tandem with an extension ladder. These sets typically provide a much higher degree of vertical lift capacity than a set of single-sided power supplies.

A vertical shaft crane busbar system is commonly used for the purpose of lifting loads from one floor level to another. Typically, these systems utilize two separate overhead crane busbars that are connected to a single power supply. The vertical shaft power supply usually has both a positive and negative safety factor, allowing only positive steps to be taken when lifting objects.

The most popular application for an overhead crane busbar is the lifting of pallets of products. Most often, the operation involves the stacking of pallets on a pallet rack. To lift these stacks vertically, a set of single-sided power supply cables must be inserted into the vertical metal conduits on either side of the stack. The set of power supply cables will then function as a lifting device that lifts the stacks by exerting a constant force against the metal bars that are inserted into the openings. The result is that the product is lifted with a consistent vertical force, and the entire operation is more effective for this reason.

Other typical uses for crane busbar systems are in the transportation of machinery and equipment. If a train engine needs to be accelerated to a specific speed, the power supplied to it can be controlled using a control loop, which includes a series of overhead cable assemblies. This system is operated with a set of conductor cables attached to the engine, which serves as the lifting source.
